Why Mobile App Development Costs So Much

Why Mobile App Development Costs So Much

A quote of R400,000 for what seemed like a simple app is enough to make anyone skeptical. The reaction is understandable. But the cost usually reflects something real, even when the number feels arbitrary.

Development time is priced by skill, not by output. A senior developer in Cape Town charges differently from a junior freelancer in Eastern Europe, and both charge differently from a full-service agency. Each has trade-offs in communication, quality control, and accountability.

Where the money goes in a standard project

  1. UI/UX design: typically 15 to 20% of total budget
  2. Frontend development: building what users see and interact with
  3. Backend development: servers, databases, APIs, authentication
  4. Quality assurance and testing: often underbudgeted and later regretted
  5. Project management and communication overhead

The backend is where most people underestimate cost. An app that stores user data, processes payments, or syncs across devices needs a server infrastructure that someone has to build and maintain.

A cheap app quote usually means something was left out of scope, not that you found a bargain.

Tobias Wendt, a logistics startup founder, went with the lowest quote and spent more fixing it than the mid-range option would have cost originally. The pattern is common enough that it has its own name in development circles: the cheap app tax.

Ask any agency to itemise the quote by phase. If they cannot, that is a signal worth paying attention to.
